And while you didn’t need the energy for long, you did need quite a bit of energy. The fastest source of energy that our body has is in the form of glucose, which is just a simple sugar that our body uses for energy. We find glucose in carbohydrates that we eat. In order to have a reservoir of quick energy, our body will store up glucose.The storage form of glucose in the human body is glycogen. Glycogen is primarily stored in the liver.
Glucose needs to be stored for a quick source of energy when the body needs it. If we didn’t have a storage of glucose then when we needed to react quickly we wouldn’t be able to. Glucose is also the only source of energy that the brain can use. Without glucose our brain would shut down. This is the structure of glycogen:
There are many branches in glycogen. The reason for these branches is because the end of each branch can act as a point for glucose to get broken off.
The enzyme glycogen phosphorylase gives the energy to add a phosphate to the glucose, breaking it off from the glycogen. The resulting molecule is glucose-1-phosphate. The glucose-1-phosphate can then be rearranged into glucose-6-phosphate.
Glucose-6-phosphate is an intermediate in glycolysis. Glycolysis is the pathway to break glucose down into energy. Since there are so many branch ends, a lot of glucose can quickly be added back into the blood when we need it.
The glycogen is also a large molecule and can pack in a lot of glucose for storage. This way there will always be enough storage for the brain to get the energy from glucose that it needs.
Glycogenolysis is a quick method for the body to get energy.
The body uses glucose for quick spurts of energy when needed. The glucose is stored in the body as glycogen. This glycogen can get broken back down into glucose through the pathways of glycogenolysis.
